| When you’re in the market for a wood console table what's the first thing you look for? Chances are you are looking for a piece that fits a picture in your head. You know where you want it to go in your home. You know the wood color and finish you are looking for. You may even know the height and other measurements you want. You make your way through catalogs of console tables looking at one item after the next, trying to sort out whether or not they are the one to fit into the look in your home. But you are forgetting one important thing, the functionality of the piece. You've heard the phrase, looks aren't everything'. It's true. While looks can go quite a long way in the décor of your home, when you buy a wood console table you want more than just a pretty piece to fancy from a distance. You need a piece of furniture that will also do a little work. After all, a wood console table has a drawer and maybe a shelf or two. Those weren't just put there for looks, they are meant to be useful, functional pieces of furniture. But how do you know? It depends on where you are purchasing your wood console table. If you are purchasing a wood console table in a store, you will be able to make this determination in person, before you bring the piece home. After you're done falling in love with the look of the table, see if the construction keeps that love affair going. Get down on the level of the table and see how the pieces are held together. Open and close the drawer. Does it stick? Is it smooth? Does it feel wobbly in your hand? How does the weight feel? Does it feel substantial enough to be opened day in and day out without any problems? Think about the kinds of things you are going to put in the drawer and look at it again. Is the construction strong enough to handle a lot of weight in the bottom, or is it a lightweight material, with no support, that may well bow and break with use? These are all things to note. The shelving on a wood console table is another important consideration. After all, you rarely are going to put light things on shelves. Usually they will be a place to hold a bunch of books. The weight of books can add up quickly. Do the shelves feel strong enough to hold up a bunch of books? Are the shelves thick and properly supported? Push down on the shelves a little with your hand. If they bow too easily, they will do the same when you try to put your books on they. Finally, consider the wood console table as a whole. Push on the top a little and see if it holds strong against the lightweight. Push it from the sides and see if it wobbles or holds it's ground. If you are ordering online, make sure to learn the company policy on returns and ask questions about the construction of the piece, so you can be more confident in the purchase. jesse akre, author and owner of numerous home decor sites, offers online consumers his thoughts on purchasing indoor accessories such as a sleek marble-topped console table, a curvaceous and chic contemporary console table and slim and sophisticated sofa tables. |
